Qi Yu started learning the Dizi in 2000 at the age of 10 under the tutelage of renowned Dizi performer Professor Zhan Yong Ming. He has obtained a distinction for the diploma grade in the NUS Chinese Instrumental Examinations, as well as a merit for the Central Conservatory of Music Graded Examinations, Dizi grade 9.
 
In 2004, Qi Yu was awarded the 3rd prize for the National Chinese Music Competition (Dizi) Senior Category. Furthermore, he has performed as a soloist on several occasions, most notably performing a concerto in Hwa Chong Institution (College) Chinese Orchestra’s biannual public concert.
 
Besides being a soloist, Qi Yu has also been part of his schools’ Chinese Orchestras, and won the Gold with Honours awards in the Singapore Youth Festival Central Judging Competition with Pei Chun Public School, and twice with Hwa Chong Institution. Outside school, Qi Yu was a member of the Toa Payoh West Community Centre Chinese Orchestra, and clinched the 1st Runner Up in the 2006 National Chinese Music Competition, Ensemble Category. In university, he took up the responsibility of being a member of the Nanyang Technological University Chinese Orchestra Executive Committee, and helped organise its public concert in 2014.
 
Now, despite being a working adult, Qi Yu still strives to be involved in Chinese music, and is a proud musician and Finance Manager of Dicapella, the only Dizi ensemble in Southeast Asia.
