Sherman started learning the dizi at the age of 9 when he joined the Chinese Orchestra in Elias Park Primary School. He continued learning the dizi when he joined Pasir Ris Secondary School Chinese Orchestra (PRSSCO), where he learned under the then woodwind sectional instructor Mr Guo Chang Suo. He joined the Music Talent Development Centre (MTDC) organised by MOE in his second year, where he was taught by Mr Lim Sin Yeo. With his guidance, Sherman attained a Dizi Grade 5 with merit.
 
In 2012, he started learning under Mr Zeng Zhi and achieved a Grade 9 in the Chinese Instrumental Grading Examination jointly organised by the China Central Conservatory of Music and Singapore Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. He was selected to perform solo for various events organised by the school. He also successfully auditioned into the Singapore Youth Chinese Orchestra (SYCO) in 2013, where he went along with to Taiwan for the Hsinchu Chinese Music Festival that same year.
 
Besides playing the dizi, Sherman also has a passion in rearrangement of songs and conducting. His arrangements have been played by PRSSCO and Di Capella.. His arrangement of Bruno Mars ‘Just the Way You’ for PRSSCO garnered critical acclaim, where he also conducted a combined ensemble featuring the CO, Concert Band and Choir. During that year, he also conducted the PRSSCO plucked string ensemble for the song 雨 during their annual concert at Singapore Conference Hall. He has also been invited back as an alumnus to conduct them for various events. Sherman was also selected as a conducting participant for SYCO’s conducting masterclass in 2014, where he recieved guidance from Mr Moses Gay. In 2014, he was also selected to conduct Ding Yi Music Company for the piece 雨中行, where he also recieved guidiance from renowned conductor Mr Hu Bing Xu.
 
Sherman is currently a Dizi Principa in the SYCO and librarian in Dicapella. He is currently pursuing a Diploma in Music at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), where he is being taught by Mr Yin Zhi Yang. He is also a part-time instructor for various schools in Singapore.
